Safeguarding
Safeguarding
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility.
Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play.
In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, we ensure our approach is child centred and we consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child (KCSIE, 2023).
What is safeguarding?
Keeping Children Safe in Education (2024) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) are statutory guidance in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Nothing is more important than children’s welfare. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable, and loving home. Children who need help and protection deserve high quality and effective support (WTSC, 2023).
Safeguarding can be defined as:
• protecting children from maltreatment
• preventing the impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
• ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
• taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Further Statutory Safeguarding Guidance
Further critical and statutory guidance is Every Child Matters and The Children Act (2004).
Every Child Matters research found that what mattered to children most is:
- being healthy: enjoying good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle
- staying safe: being protected from harm and neglect
- enjoying and achieving: getting the most out of life and developing the skills for adulthood
- making a positive contribution: being involved with the community and society and not engaging in anti-social or offending behaviour
- economic well-being: not being prevented by economic disadvantage from achieving their full potential in life.
The Children Act (2004) aims to improve and integrate children’s services, promote early intervention, provide strong leadership and bring together different professionals in multi-disciplinary teams in order achieve positive outcomes for children and young people and their families.
Designated Safeguarding Lead
Mr. Bull, our Headteacher, is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for our school.
The DSL takes lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection (including online safety and understanding the filtering and monitoring systems and processes in place).
Mrs. Laviolette is our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Mental Health Lead
Mr. Williams is our children's Mental Health Lead in school.
We recognise we have an important role to play in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils. Mental health problems can be an indicator that a child has suffered or is at risk of suffering abuse, neglect or exploitation (KCSIE, 2023).
